I manage a Home Care Company for more on the home care industry in and what we are trying to work towards visit: NBHSA.CA
I manage nearly 50 clients, that is 50 different homes in a system that has no set rules and regulations governing its employees or practices. On top of that in my office we are a two woman show, trying to supervise 30 plus staff that are in a constant state of change because the pay is so crappy which is directly affected by the lack of government support we receive. I work with social workers who don’t communicate well at all and families who I try my best to keep happy with there constant changing needs. I listen to complaints from clients, staff, family about a system that is directly related to our local and federal government issues surrounding health care. When it comes down to it most days it all gets laid on my shoulders because I am the face of this company, the company that aids clients as their illness progresses and that aids clients as they die. I have always loved seniors, I’ve always loved people and I walked in to the home care industry thinking I could operate as I always had loving people and serving the elderly with my whole heart in whatever capacity that way. The truth is, I often feel powerless and exhausted but I have to keep in mind that sweet old woman who would call you an angel for performing the most simple of tasks for her and that gentle elderly man who thinks you are precious for just giving him the time of day. I want more for home care, I want more our aging population and I want far more for the caregivers who give there all to provide a service that as of yet gives them far less in return.
We all deserve more!
My folks and I often come back to the piece of scripture that states; “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40) I suggest reading the whole chapter but the focus here is on"the least of these" meaning in this context those who lack optimal health, wealth and the basic necessities of survival. When we think about the things society, capitalism and in many ways our government officials show as being most important I feel we aren't truly caring for those who are sick, hungry .. in need... "the least of these". And in my industry I feel the same lack of recognition of what should truly be valued in this life.... one another.
